The two cities

There is a permanence of defeat
I sense in Delhi
And a temporariness of struggle in Mumbai
If Delhi closes on your throat
Mumbai frees your spirit to believe
Anything is possible
If Delhi puts you down to talk
in terms of wider roads
Mumbai silences you with its heart,
perhaps heavy on consumerist cholesterol
But still a heart that's pumping warm blood
Delhi is neither alive, nor dead
For the dead make fantastic tales
And, for all I care,
it seems to be on a monoxide ventilator
